Sustainable Solutions Framework

Whether launching a strategic initiative—such as a new policy, long-term plan, or investment decision—or executing operational efforts like technology deployments, engineering projects, or service enhancements, organizations must align their actions with enduring principles to achieve meaningful, lasting impact.

This framework draws on the Brundtland Commission’s foundational definition of sustainability and Jonathon Porritt’s Five Capitals model, emphasizing the need to deliver repeatable results within systems without degrading human, financial, or natural capital at rates that outpace replenishment. In other words, sustainable solutions must serve both present needs and future viability.

Our nine-step framework equips leaders to navigate complexity and deliver solutions that are not only effective, but truly sustainable.

Transforming Global Engineering Visibility for the Department of Defense

Throughout my 20-year career as an Army engineer officer, I was consistently frustrated by the lack of an integrated system to provide near-real-time visibility into U.S. military engineering assets and projects worldwide. That gap hindered coordination, transparency, and strategic decision-making across the enterprise.

During my final assignment with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, I had the opportunity to change that.

As Deputy Commander and Latin American Program Director for the Mobile District, I led a collaborative effort with the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), USACE Headquarters, U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM), the Department of Defense Joint Staff Engineers, and others to extend a combat-zone visibility tool into a global solution. We leveraged a SharePoint-based architecture that pulled data from multiple sources—including the USACE project management infrastructure—to create a unified, scalable platform.

My role included:

  • Partnering with the USACE Reachback Operations Center (UROC) to improve usability and expand coverage to the USSOUTHCOM Area of Responsibility.
  • Driving adoption among senior engineering leadership, persistently advocating for updates to information management processes and integration of the new system into briefings and operational planning.
  • Engaging directly with General Officers and Senior Civilians across the engineering and defense communities to establish this platform as a Department of Defense standard.

The result: a $125,000 investment was transformed into a global information management solution estimated to save the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers over $5 million annually—a testament to the power of process improvement, strategic alignment, and relentless advocacy.

Enhancing the Time Away from Work Experience at a Fortune 100 Company

As Director of Time Away from Work (TAFW) at Albertsons, I led enterprise-wide transformation of leave management programs—balancing compliance, compassion, and operational efficiency across a workforce of over 250,000. My role centered on reimagining how employees experience time off, while driving measurable improvements in policy clarity, system integration, and administrative consistency.

I spearheaded Project Possible, a strategic initiative to overhaul Albertsons’ TAFW programs from the ground up. This included:

  • Standardizing policies and procedures across business units to create a unified “One Best Way” approach.
  • Redesigning plan architecture to align with evolving workforce needs and regulatory requirements.
  • Enhancing systems and technology, streamlining leave administration through automation and improved data flows.
  • Developing communication strategies that made complex policies accessible and actionable for employees and managers.
  • Building educational resources to empower frontline staff and HR teams with clear, consistent guidance.

By integrating data analytics, cross-functional collaboration, and human-centered design, my team helped transform leave management from a reactive and oftentimes manual process into a proactive, strategic asset. My leadership ensured compliance, reduced administrative burden, and elevated employee trust—all while reinforcing Albertsons’ commitment to operational excellence and workforce well-being.
